At Martinhal, we understand that a great holiday also depends on the richness of the gastronomic experience. Our restaurants and cuisine play a fundamental role, as important as accommodation, hospitality, or location.

Drawing on the wealth of portuguese gastronomy, internationally recognized for the quality of its artisans and products such as wine, cheese, olive oil, or smoked meats, Martinhal has chosen to present culinary creations based on genuinely Portuguese products, prepared using traditional methods.

In the three Martinhal restaurants at your disposal, you will not only find a modern and delicious menu but also embark on a long and timeless journey to the far corners of this wonderful country. All of our restaurants offer specially curated children menus.

The menu is filled with temptations, including grilled fish, lobster, seafood rice, and the famous Algarve cataplanas.

Sagres and Vila do Bispo

Occupied since prehistoric times, Vila do Bispo owes its name to being donated to the Bishop of Silves in the early 16th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries, this area thrived thanks to tuna fishing, a practice that provided financial resources for Prince Henry the Navigator to fund Portuguese maritime discoveries. Vila do Bispo gained prominence in the 15th century, largely due to Prince Henry’s presence in the region, particularly at the Sagres Fortress, where he founded a nautical school.
Another significant location in this region is Cape St. Vincent, which has held religious importance since prehistoric times and was a medieval pilgrimage destination until the relics of St. Vincent were moved to Lisbon in the 12th century by order of King Afonso Henriques. By the late 16th century, the region faced frequent attacks from Moorish pirates and English privateers, leading to significant damage and the construction of new defensive systems. Like much of the Algarve coastline, the 1755 earthquake caused widespread devastation. Today, the region’s rich historical past remains one of its greatest tourist attractions.

Beaches

With contrasting territories, this area forms a pivotal zone where the cold and humid Atlantic air meets the dry and warm Mediterranean climate, while simultaneously, the large ancient schist massif of the Western Coast intersects with the more recent carbonate rocks of the Southern Fringe (particularly with the Algarve Barrocal).

The beach offerings are diverse: in the West, the sandy stretches, battered by the winds and waves of the Atlantic, are nestled between steep rocky cliffs, while on the Southern Coast, the cliffs, though aesthetically sculpted, lose some of their grandeur and sheltered coves from the winds and swells are common.

Cordoama Beach
This is a vast beach, with sand stretching endlessly to the south and north. The view of the cliffs in successive layers, progressively mistier, is stunning. Despite being occasionally visited by surf and bodyboard schools, tranquillity can always be found due to the beach’s size. The cliffs rise high, reaching over a hundred meters, and on this beach, there is a hill that serves as a natural viewpoint, often used for paragliding. On the north-facing rocky walls, shiny white layers can be seen, which are extensive lichens covering the rocks. A small stream runs through a ravine to the beach. The scent of rockrose here is intense, and in the small dunes formed on the beach, plants like the storn, thistle, and the showy beach daffodil can be observed. There is ample but unorganized parking, with support facilities (restaurant and WC) and surveillance during the bathing season.

Beliche Beach
This is one of the beaches sheltered from north and west winds, located in the wide bay defined by Ponta de Sagres and Cape St. Vincent. The beach seems to have been carved into the high, warm-coloured cliffs, and to reach the sandy shore, one must descend a massive stone staircase. Along the staircase, one can admire the numerous endemic plants that colonize the limestone lapiaz (rock deeply etched by erosion) and the red soil of terra rossa, as well as the steep, highly stratified and carved limestone cliffs with spectacular caves and landslides. On the beach itself, there is a large variety of intricately shaped and sculpted rocks. It is a popular spot for surfing and bodyboarding. There is ample but unorganized parking, with nearby support facilities (restaurant and WC) and surveillance during the bathing season.

Ingrina Beach
On the way to the beach, it is worth taking in the extensive fields and the frequent megalithic monuments scattered across this region, especially white limestone menhirs. Near the sea, agricultural fields are replaced by low coastal shrubs. The beach is small, shell-shaped, and has a paradisiacal appearance, inviting a swim in the calm bay waters. A large platform of limestone lapiaz to the west and intricately carved limestone cliffs to the east delimit the cove. The beach is ideal for diving, with an extensive area of submerged rock formations both to the west and east. There is ample but unorganized parking, with support facilities (restaurant and WC) and surveillance during the bathing season.

Zavial Beach
The beach is situated at the mouth of a seasonal stream, where riparian vegetation and small pebbles extend to the sand. On the eastern side, there is a small eucalyptus forest with barrocal shrubs in the undergrowth, sometimes used for wild camping. Zavial is very popular with surfers, with the eastern section of the beach being quieter, featuring intricately carved cliffs and rock formations locally referred to as “furnas.” This part of the beach can be accessed by walking along the sand or from the top of the cliff. Near Zavial, the ruins of a 17th-century fortification can be visited. There is unorganized parking, with support facilities (restaurant and WC) and surveillance during the bathing season.

Igreja Matriz de Vila do Bispo (Church of Vila do Bispo)
The Church of Vila do Bispo dates back to the 16th century but underwent significant renovations in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Its single nave and Baroque-style decorative elements provide a cohesive aesthetic. Unique features include painted panels on the nave ceiling and Baroque tiles from Lisbon.

The Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe

One of the oldest churches in the Algarve, this 14th-century pilgrimage chapel was remodeled in the 15th century, possibly with Prince Henry’s patronage. Its Gothic-style architecture and symbolic carvings reflect local legends.

Sagres Fortress
Located at Cape Sagres, the Promontorium Sacrum renowned for its unparalleled beauty, the Sagres Fortress traces its origins to Prince Henry the Navigator, who established a settlement here and passed away in 1460. Little remains of the wall commissioned by the “Father of the Discoveries,” as the fortress was rebuilt in the 16th century and again in the second half of the 18th century, when it was adapted to the “Vauban” defensive system.

One of the most striking attractions of the Sagres Fortress is undoubtedly the rosa-dos-ventos (wind rose), a sundial that many believe dates back to Prince Henry’s time and the nautical school he founded in Sagres.

A site of profound historical and symbolic value, this monument offers visitors the chance to revisit the glorious era of maritime discoveries and enjoy one of the most stunning landscapes in the world.

Fortress of Cape St. Vincent

The fortress was rebuilt in the 16th century to protect the coast from frequent attacks by Moorish pirates. It was built on the site of a medieval convent, which, according to legend, housed the remains of St. Vincent.

This is a military construction with a polygonal layout and an entrance portal topped with a royal shield, featuring a drawbridge.

Inside the fortress is the St. Vincent Lighthouse, built in 1904 and still in operation today.
